49th Parallel

DIRECTED BY - Michael Powell

A taut, suspenseful World War II drama about Nazi servicemen trying to make their way across Canada to reach neutral American land after their U-boat is sunk in the Gulf of the St. Lawrence. The best of British and Canadian talent were brought together to create this brilliant piece of war-time propaganda. Eric Portman as the sinister German U-Boat captain leads his men through a series of terrorizing encounters, crossing paths with a diverse string of good Canadian citizens including Laurence Olivier, Anton Walbrook, a very young Glynis Johns, Leslie Howard, and finally Raymond Massey. This early collaboration from writer/director team Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger with editing by a young David Lean, is topped off by a rousing score from the great Ralph Vaugn Williams.
